The German edition of Rolling Stone magazine had a run of free promotional cds that paid tribute to certain music genres. The Rare Trax 41 edition, also known as ‘clouds like sugar’, was a compilation that paid tribute to shoegaze music, bands and the bands that have been influenced by it.
There are 11 songs on the CD, each band completely different. From actual shoegaze bands like Ride, to modern shoegaze influenced electro bands like M83. The compilation has a truly European feel to it with each band being from a different corner of Europe and showing the reach and influence that heavily distorted shoegaze music has had.
The title ‘CLOUDS LIKE SUGAR’ also pays homage to how shoegaze music was loud and dark, but yet could be subtle, pleasant and beautiful.
