Background Information
Never Follow Suit will be the third single to be taken from The Radio Dept.'s third studio Album Clinging to a Scheme
An announcement on the 14th of April 2010 suggested at a June 16th 2010 release, but that's been pushed back to November 9th 2010 instead. This will tie in with a proposed US tour.
Never Follow Suit was the natural choice for the next single as it's the second most popular song on Clinging to a Scheme, based on an online poll by Radio Dept Fans. Add to that the success of the album as it made the top 20 of the Billboard Heatseekers chart being on frequent rotation via the renowned BBC's 6 Music radio station.
The CD single will feature 'Never Follow Suit, 2 new songs and a remix. After the success of Clinging to a Scheme on 12" vinyl and the reissue on white vinyl, Never Follow Suit may itself follow suit with a 12 inch vinyl pressing
Never Follow Suit features a poignant quote and sample taken from the 1980s Documentary "Style Wars". Style Wars is a film about the Graffiti Scene in inner city New York at the birth of Hip-Hop. The Documentary follows a group of teenagers as they go around tagging the city's trains. The Main focus of the documentary and of the sample is a boy by the name of 'Skeme' who's prime pursuit is getting his art seen for no other gain than that. It's suggested by not confirmed that the album 'Clinging to a Scheme' takes its name from Style Wars main character.
The Quote itself is:
"Every time I get on a train
Almost everyday I see my name,
I'll say:
"yeah y'know I was there, I bombed it"
It's for me, it's not for nobody else to see
I don't care about nobody else seeing it
All these other people who don't write
They're excluded
I don't care about them
They don't matter to me,
It's for us
It's for us"
It is believed that this quote was used as a direct way of conveying the bands feelings to the media who, after the success of Marie Antoinette, constantly called for the band to pursue certain pastures and styles and as a result forgetting what The Radio Dept. means and stands for. These feelings have been echoed before through songs & released like We Made The Team and Recent Radio Dept. Interviews with Johan Duncanson
